What is a Special Interest Section?
Special Interest Sections are made up of members that have an interest in a specific field. Each member will receive all information related to the field of interest including seminar announcements, list serve sign-up and "Ask the Expert" forum announcements and news pertaining to the field of interest. No volunteer time or participation is required.
There are seven Special Interest Sections:
- Accounting & Assurance
- Business Valuation & Litigation Services
- CPAs in Industry
- Financial Planning
- Information Technology
- International
- Taxation
You may sign up for as many Sections as you would like.
What is a Special Interest Section Steering Committee?
The Special Interest Section Steering Committee is designed to plan the activities of the Special Interest Section. The committee is made up of volunteers who take time to devote to planning the activities of the Section and have an interest in the advancement of CPAs in that specific field. They will plan seminars and roundtable events, contribute content to the Section's Web page, write articles for the NewsLedger or eNews, and any other activities that the steering committee would like to offer to the Section.
There are seven steering committees, one for each of the Special Interest Sections:
- Accounting & Assurance
- Business Valuation & Litigation Services
- CPAs in Industry
- Financial Planning
- Information Technology
- International
- Taxation
I don't have time to volunteer. Can I still participate in a Section?
No volunteer time or participation is required. By joining a Special Interest Section, you will receive information on seminars, news and other activities or programs that would be useful to you without volunteering your time.
I don't live in Phoenix. Can I still participate in a Section?
Yes. All of the Section activities incorporate technology, which will allow for participation in all areas of the state. Each Section will have its own Web page and list serve. The list serves will be available in October 2001.
Why did the ASCPA change from a committee structure to a Special Interest Section structure?
The ASCPA would like to offer benefits to all members, not just those that have time to volunteer. By joining a Special Interest Section, you will receive information on seminars, news and other activities or programs that would be useful to you.
The Sections also allow members from all areas of the state to participate with the use of technology to end the barriers of time and distance.
If you have time to volunteer, you can help plan the activities of the Sections by joining a Special Interest Section Steering Committee. There are also short-term commitments available on task forces.
What are the benefits of joining Special Interest Sections?
You will receive information related to your field of interest without having to commit time to a committee or task force. You will also have the ability to attend any seminars, roundtables, or participate in any other activities that the steering committee plans for the section.
How many Special Interest Sections can I join?
There is no limit to the number of Sections you may join. There are seven sections:

Is there a fee for joining a Section?
There is no fee for joining a Section. Section membership is one of your ASCPA benefits.

The ASCPA has many opportunities for you to volunteer your time.
Special Interest Section Steering Committees - The Special Interest Section Steering Committee is designed to plan the activities of the Special Interest Section. Task Forces - Task Forces are formed to handle recurring projects and will meet as often as necessary to achieve a specific goal.
Conference Task Forces - Plan annual conferences.
What short-term volunteer assignments are available?
The ASCPA recognizes that sometimes you are not able to commit to a "standing" steering committee. We offer short-term volunteer opportunities on a variety of task forces that have a specified goal.
Task Forces
Task Forces are formed to handle recurring projects and will meet as often
as necessary to achieve a specific goal.
CPE Task Force - The CPE Task Force will review potential continuing professional education courses and provide recommendations to the ASCPA.
Tax Legislation Task Force - The Tax Legislation Task Force will meet to discuss legislative issues that affect the CPA profession and make recommendations and write position papers to present to the ASCPA Executive Committee.
Membership Task Forces - The Member Services Department has developed a number of membership marketing objectives for the Society through 2003. To assist in these important endeavors, the ASCPA will be developing membership task forces. These task forces will provide input and assistance with membership recruitment and retention activities.
Conference Task
Forces
Conference planning will be done by task forces, operating under the appropriate
section. These task forces will meet approximately three times per year
to plan their respective conferences. The conference task forces are:
- Arizona Federal Tax
- Institute
- Business Valuation
- Construction Industry
- Financial Planning
- Governmental Accounting
- International
- Not-for-Profit
The committee I participated on last year is not listed as a Special Interest Section Steering Committee. What committee should I sign up for?
The Arizona Tax Liaison and IRS Liaison committees will operate within the Taxation Section. Please sign up for the Taxation Section to participate in these activities and send an e-mail to Brenda Fradin asking to be added to the Arizona Tax Liaison and IRS Liaison meeting notice list (bfradin@ascpa.com or 602-252-4144 x200). If you would like to help plan the activities of the Section, please join the Taxation Section Steering Committee.
The Not-for-Profit committee will operate within the CPAs in Industry Section. Please join this section if you would like to participate in the Not-for-Profit networking meetings. If you would like to help plan the activities of the CPAs in Industry Section, please join the CPAs in Industry Section Steering Committee. If you would like to help plan the Not-for-Profit Conference, please join the Not-for-Profit Conference Task Force.
Task forces will be set up on an as needed basis for Public Relations activities. Please contact Cindy Natani at (602) 252-4144, ext. 205 or cnatani@ascpa.com if you are interested in volunteering to assist with tax questions on a TV or radio call-in program or other event.
Activities of the Networking Services committee will be redirected to the membership department of the ASCPA. Members that are interested in helping recruit and retain members should sign up for the membership task force.
Governmental Accounting Standards activities will be part of the Accounting and Assurance Section.
Management of an Accounting Practice-Tucson will be part of the Southern Chapter activities.
Tax Legislation is now a task force.
