Mark Landy — Chair
Mark Landy, CPA, has been a partner with Miller, Allen & Co., P.C. for more than 20 years. He has served terms on the AICPA Governmental Technical Standards Subcommittee and the Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee, and is currently serving a term on the AICPA Technical Standards Subcommittee. Mark served eight years on the Arizona State Board of Accountancy’s Accounting and Auditing Standards Committee and currently serves on the Certification Advisory Committee. He has served on the ASCPA Governmental Accounting Conference Committee since its inception and has also served on the AICPA Annual National Governmental Accounting Auditing Update Conference Steering Committee. In addition to his professional activities, Mark is also active in community service where he has served on the board of directors of numerous nonprofit organizations including serving in the positions of treasurer and vice president of Family Service Agency. Mark also currently serves on the advisory board for Republic Bank AZ, N.A. His wife, Sue, is also a CPA, and they have two daughters.
George M. Cohen — Chair-Elect
George Cohen, CPA, is senior managing director of American Express Tax and Business Services Arizona. He has more than 25 years of experience providing accounting, business and tax services in various industries and professions with a specialty in healthcare. Formerly co-owner and partner with Schwartz Cohen and Company, Cohen is well known in the Valley for his work within the healthcare community. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the PhoenixArt Museum and a member of the American Express Arizona Philanthropic Foundation Board. He is also past President, Treasurer and Board Member of Actors Theatre of Phoenix. Cohen has served as Commissioner of the Phoenix Arts Commission and is recipient of the Arts Advocate of the Year Award from Business Volunteers for the Arts. He has served as the chair of the Jewish Commission on Continuity and serves on the Executive Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, where he has been a Board Member since 1992. Previously, Cohen has served as president and board member of the Council for Jews with Special Needs and the Tri-City Jewish Community Center.
Layne Simmons — Secretary/Treasurer
Layne Simmons, CPA, is the Vice President of Tax at Waste Services, Inc. (WSI) He previously served a term on the Society’s Board of Directors and Layne is a former chairman of the Society’s Tax Legislation Committee, where as committee chairman, he spoke before the Arizona Senate Finance Committee, the Arizona House Ways and Means Committee and Arizona House Commerce Committee explaining the Society’s proposed tax legislation. Layne is a member of the Board of Directors and a former President of the Arizona Chapter of Tax Executives Institute, the nation’s preeminent association of corporate tax professionals. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors of Arizona Tax Research Association. Prior to joining WSI, Layne was the Executive Director of Tax at Viad Corp., having worked prior to that in the Phoenix office of Deloitte Haskins & Sells (Deloitte & Touche). He has been married to his wife, Deena, for 21 years and they have three children.
Nancy Roach - Immediate Past Chair
Nancy Roach, CPA, has been volunteering for almost 20 years and has worked in the nonprofit field for the past 10 years. Currently she is the executive director of the Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix, a position she has held for more than three years. Previously, she served as the finance director at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Southern Arizona and the YWCA of Maricopa County and still serves the YWCA as the longest running member of their Finance Committee. In addition to her board service with the ASCPA, she has served on the boards of the EmilyAndersenFamilyLearningCenter, the Junior League of Phoenix and Valley Leadership. In 2000, Nancy was honored with the ASCPA Public Service Award and in 2004 she received the YWCA Tribute to Women Dorothy Willey Volunteer Award. She has been married to her husband, Tom, for 25 years and has a 20-year-old daughter, Kelly, and two dogs.
Joyce Barden — Director 2004-2006
Joyce Barden, CPA, MBA, CBM, is currently a senior professor of accounting and business at DeVry University of Phoenix, and a senior faculty member of Keller Graduate School of Management in Scottsdale. She was the 2001 recipient of “DeVry University Teacher of the Year Award.” Prior to joining DeVryUniversity she spent more than 20 years in management and accounting related positions in the computer and telecommunications industry. This included positions such as an International Internal Auditor for Sperry Corporation and Honeywell, where she traveled for more than five years all over the U.S. and Europe. Barden started her career by working for three years in public accounting doing various Accounting, Tax and Audit Services primarily for small businesses.
James Busby — Director 2004-2006
James G. Busby, Jr., CPA, is an attorney/shareholder at Gallagher & Kennedy, P.A., where his practice involves all areas of state and local tax. Before joining Gallagher & Kennedy, Busby practiced in the state and local tax area as a senior manager at Deloitte and, prior to that, as a manager at Andersen. Before entering private practice, Busby served as chief auditor and principal tax analyst for the Transaction Privilege (sales) and Use Tax Division of the Arizona Department of Revenue. Busby lectures extensively on state and local tax topics. Active in the business, professional and nonprofit communities, he currently serves as a board member at the Arizona Tax Research Association, as the legislative liaison for the State Bar of Arizona’s Tax Section, as member of the Arizona State Board of Accountancy’s Law Review Advisory Committee and as a board member at Dayspring Preschool & Kindergarten. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife and their two sons.
Mark Eberle — Director 2004-2006
Mark F. Eberle, CPA, is a managing director of Henry & Horne. Eberle is involved in management issues and business consulting. The Small Business Administration selected Eberle as the 1992 Accountant Advocate of the Year. He also received the Segner Business Volunteer award from the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. He has been a member of the ASCPA and the AICPA since 1975. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Scottsdale Partnership, a member of the Scottsdale Rotary Club, and member of the Executive Committee of the Scottsdale Area Chamber.
Patricia Elder — Director 2004-2006
Pat Elder, CPA, MBA is manager of business management & operations for North America sales at Lucent Technologies. She has more than 20 years of industry experience in finance, accounting, and internal audit at technology and health insurance companies. As an active volunteer, Elder has served several terms on the board of the Junior League of Phoenix and has also supported the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation, and the CARES Literacy Program at Mirage Elementary School. She was also a past president and founding board member of the Phoenix chapter of Women in Leadership at Lucent.
Rick Goldenson — Director 2004-2006
Richard Goldenson, CPA, is the managing partner of Clifton Gunderson’s SouthwestClientServiceCenter which includes Arizona offices located in Phoenix, Tucson and Tempe. Goldenson recently relocated to Phoenix after spending approximately five years in the Tucson office. He provides audit, tax, and consulting services to clients in the commercial and non-profit industries in addition to his administrative duties as managing partner. He is also currently a member of the Clifton Gunderson Partnership Board of Directors and was a board member of the Lighthouse YMCA of Tucson.
Richard Skufza — Director 2004-2006
Richard Skufza, CPA, MBA, is vice president/chief financial officer for E.B. Lane. E.B. Lane is the oldest and one of the largest advertising, marketing and public relations firms in Arizona whose purpose is to grow their clients’ businesses by creating consumer enthusiasm for their brands. Skufza has served on various CPAs in Industry committees of the Society as well as being a former board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona. He also serves as part-time faculty for University of Phoenix in their undergraduate and graduate business programs.
James Buhr - Director 2005-2007
James J. Buhr, CPA, is the chief financial officer of Bashas’ Inc., a family-owned Arizona supermarket chain of 152-plus stores, and still growing rapidly. He began his career with the company in 1986 as controller. Prior to coming to Arizona, Buhr served in many managerial positions in computer systems, finance and auditing with the Dayton Hudson Corporation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is an avid golfer and participates in as many charitable tournaments as time will allow. Buhr is committed to the integrity and improvement of everything in which he is involved.
Randy Roberts - Director 2005-2007
Randy Roberts, CPA, CGFM, is the professional practice director for the Arizona Office of the Auditor General. Randy is responsible for providing auditing and governmental accounting technical research and assistance and performing quality assurance reviews of reports issued by his Office. Randy’s 24 years of audit and audit-related experience includes most levels of government: the state, universities, counties, community colleges, hospitals, health plans, and school districts. Randy is an active member of the AICPA, ASCPA, National State Auditors Association, Association of Government Accountants, and Government Finance Officers Association. He is currently serving on the AICPA’s State and Local Government Expert Panel and its National Governmental Accounting and Auditing Conference Committee, and the National State Auditors Association’s audit and accounting standards technical committee.
Eric Sanchez — Director 2005-2007
Eric Sanchez, CPA, is a senior financial analyst with American Express where he is responsible for the monthly presentation and analysis of all the U.S. Consumer and Small Business Services markets Cards in Force. He is also responsible for the monthly presentation to Management of key metrics and financial results for OPEN: The Small Business Network of American Express. Prior to American Express, Sanchez worked as a financial audit senior for the State of Arizona – Office of the Auditor General, working with staff in performing financial audits of state agencies, colleges, counties and public health providers. In addition to his professional activities, Sanchez is also active in his community through participation in various national nonprofit organizations and causes. He has been married for six years to his wife Kayce, who is an educator at PinnacleHigh School in the ParadiseValleyUnifiedSchool District. They have a three-year-old son Ayden and two-year-old daughter Isabella.
Robert Shanley — Director 2005-2007
Robert Shanley, CPA, is an audit partner with KPMG and was recently named as an SEC reviewing partner the in the KPMG organization. Previously, he was a senior partner and professional practice director with Arthur Andersen with responsibilities that included risk assurance and quality control for Andersen Pacific Southwest region, and division head for their San Diego office. Throughout his career, Shanley has worked with clients in a wide range of industries. He is a member of the Arizona, California and New York state societies of CPAs and is a member of the AICPA.
Alan Yong — Director 2005-2007
Alan Yong, CPA, currently is a tax solutions consultant with Keegan, Linscott & Kenon, P.C. in Tucson. Once a Seattle-based tax partner with Coopers & Lybrand, he shifted his career focus from tax issues and compliance to financial and tax technology. He has also served as director of tax outsourcing at Ernst & Young LLC, and subsequently, Research Director of Financial Software at Aberdeen Group, Inc., a Boston-based IT analyst firm. Yong’s White Paper, “Business Intelligence for Tax Planning: Value, Strategy, and Vision,” is published in DMReview.com.
Douglas Haywood — AICPA Council Member*
Doug Haywood, CPA, is financial audit manager for the State of Arizona — Office of the Auditor General, where he is responsible for directing activities of staff in performing financial and compliance audits of state agencies, colleges, universities, counties and public health providers. Haywood was the president of the National Association of Government Accountants (AGA) in 1997-1998. Haywood has been an active member of the ASCPA since 1980. He chaired the Governmental Accounting Conference Committee and was awarded the Society’s Outstanding Chairperson Award. In addition to his professional activities, Haywood is active in community service. He is a former treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Senior Olympics.
Ken Husband — AICPA Council Member*
Ken Husband, CPA, is currently a sole practitioner specializing in tax and financial planning for the family and family owned corporation. Husband was previously associated with Arthur Andersen for 30 years before retiring as a senior tax partner. He was chair of the ASCPA during 2002-2003 and was a board member for several terms. He is currently involved with various tax and financial planning committees. Husband has been involved with the Arizona Tax Institute since its inception 20 years ago. In addition to his professional activities, Ken is actively involved with Phoenix Rotary 100 and the PhoenixArt Museum.
*Beginning October 2005. Until then, the AICPA Council members continue to be Larry Field and Rufus Glasper.
