Holding High Expectations

Mark Landy, CPA

As I look forward to serving as this year’s chair of the Society, the auditor in me required that I look back and reflect upon the Society’s accomplishments and successes over the past year. During the past year, the Society has had a member, Peggy Ullman, nominated to the Board of Directors of the AICPA. Another member, Kate Forbes, was selected as the recipient of the AICPA’s Public Service Award. The Society also met or exceeded each of its strategic plan measurements during the past year.

Prior to the start of each new fiscal year, the Board of Directors approves a set of strategic plan measurements. The measurements encompass advocacy, continuing professional education, membership and organization. Thanks to the hard work of Nancy Roach, the immediate past chair, the Board of Directors, the Section Chairs, Section members, the tireless efforts of our CEO and President Cindie Hubiak and the staff of the Society, each of the strategic plan measurements were either met or exceeded during the past year.

My expectations are high as we enter this new year. The Board of Directors, consisting of 19 men and women with varied and diverse backgrounds, yet all with a passion for our profession, were selected to represent you, the membership of the Society. The Board is scheduled to meet quarterly. In addition, a leadership day is scheduled in June, and a day of strategic planning will take place in November. The Board of Directors is committed to ensuring that the Society adheres to its vision of being “recognized as a premier professional organization that leads trusted professionals who enable people and organizations to enhance the present and shape the future and that influences the CPA profession.”

The Society’s vision statement is included with each Board member’s quarterly Board packet along with the Society’s mission and values. It is with the Society’s vision, mission and values in mind that the Board and Society staff conducts business. Each member of the Board represents a different segment of our profession and brings a unique, different, and valuable perspective to the Board meetings. Each member of the Board and the Society staff, besides being passionate about our profession, has one thing in common: service to you, our valued membership.

This year will bring a number of national and state issues to be considered by the Board and membership of the Society. A few of the issues on the national level include, “private company GAAP,” NASBA initiatives, ensuring there is an adequate supply of accounting graduates to meet the demand, transparency, Social Security reform, and 360 degrees of financial literacy. On the state level, peer review, tax conformity, lawsuit abuse reform and accessibility to university programs to fulfill the 150-hour requirement are all issues that promise to be a challenge.

I am confident that with the varied talents of the Society’s membership, the Board of Directors and the Society staff, we will have a year of many accomplishments and successes. The AICPA’s new tagline is “America counts on CPAs.” Let’s modify that tagline to read, “Arizona counts on CPAs.”
