Emerging Technologies
These five technologies were placed on a “watch list” of emerging technologies that may not have viable commercial acceptance currently, but show the potential of impacting businesses and individuals in the next 24-36 months.
1. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) — Silicon chips and an antenna that transmits data to a wireless receiver could one day be used to track everything from soda cans to cereal boxes. Unlike bar codes, RFID tags do not require line-of-sight for reading. Hundreds of tags can be read in a second.
2. Search — Companies like Google and Microsoft are putting research and development into new ways of pinpointing digital files.
3. Fuel Cells — Methanol-powered fuel cells are an alternative to aging battery technology that will help users complete the wireless puzzle. These devices are environmentally friendly and have an unlimited life for mobile devices.
4.Digital Home — The line between “digital home” and the office work-day continues to blur. For example, the non-desktop PC technology is making a difference in how we work at the office and live at home.
5. Display Technologies — The continued evolution of various display technologies allow for higher resolutions and smaller devices with lower power consumptions. One display service is serving multiple functions such as television receiver and computer monitor.
