Don Bays Elected President Arizona State Board of Accountancy

Don Bays, CPA, CVA, Associate Director of Business Valuation and Litigation Support Services for Henry & Horne, LLP, has been elected President of the Arizona State Board of Accountancy effective July 1, 2005. Don was appointed by Governor Jane Hull for a five-year term on the board, which began in July 2002. Don’s service to the accounting industry is legendary. Bays has 34 years of experience in public and private accounting, and he is recipient of the Dixon Fagerberg Excellence in Writing Award, and recently completed a 15-year term as the editor of the Arizona State Board of Accountancy newsletter. He has written articles for the Journal of Accountancy, and the CPA Journal and AZ CPA. Don has lectured extensively on business valuation concepts and lost earnings calculations to business owners, bankers, attorneys, and CPAs.  In August 1999, he was the recipient of the distinguished Life Membership Award from the Arizona Society of CPAs.

 

The Accountancy Board elected the other following officers: Earl Shivers, CPA, as treasurer and Marianne DeVries, CPA, with DeVries CPAs of Arizona, as secretary.

 

Debra Hunter, CPA, with Hunter Hagan & Co., was appointed by the Accountancy Board to the Certification Advisory Committee.

 

Julia Bradbury, CPA, with McGladrey & Pullen, was appointed by the Accountancy Board to the Accounting & Auditing Standards Committee.

 

Sam Fogleman, CPA, with KPMG, was appointed to the Arizona State Board of Accountancy by Governor Napolitano.

 

Dick Ray, CPA, was inducted as the President of Rotary Club 100, the largest Rotary club in Arizona.  Carl Balderson, CPA, will serve as treasurer.

 

Thank you to Cord D.Armstrong, CPA, with CBIZ Miller Wagner, for volunteering his time to speak to prospective candidates during three workshops sponsored by The Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens, MCC Center for Public Policy, East Valley NAACP, and the MLK Jr. Celebration Committee. As a campaign treasurer for numerous statewide campaigns, Cord shared his vast experience with the attendees. The purpose of the three workshops, which took place in Mesa in  June, was to help demystify the election process by explaining  to prospective candidates how to raise money, develop a campaign strategy and deal with media.

 

Pat Elder, CPA, has been named executive director for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - Phoenix Affiliate.

 

Henry & Horne, LLP, is pleased to announce the promotion of Donna Laubscher to Senior Manager.

 

Henry & Horne, LLP is proud to be the official accounting firm for the Home of Miracles VI benefiting Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  Meritage Homes Phoenix is giving away a $650,000 fully furnished, 4,464-square-foot luxurious home.  This home will be given away in a drawing on May 12, 2006.  All proceeds benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation.

 

ASCPA member Theresa Drew recently received the Beta Alpha Psi Business Information Professional of the Year Award. She graduated from NAU in 1979 and is the managing partner with Deloitte & Touche in the San Diego office. She was recognized at the national meeting in San Francisco in August.

 

The State Bar of Arizona’s Board of Governors has appointed Frank Barriga, CPA, as a public member. Barriga works for the city of Phoenix in the fiscal management division of the Aviation Department.

 

Heinfeld, Meech & Co., P.C. recently promoted Scott W. Kies, CPA, to partner. In addition, they named Jill A. Shaw, CPA, Kera Badalamenti, CPA, and Tonya D. Pelke, CPA as audit managers, CW Payne as consulting manager, and Catherine Post as a senior in their audit department. 

 

David B. Barber, CPA, has been promoted to partner of the Tucson office of Regier Carr & Monroe, L.L.P.

 

Keats, Connelly & Associates, an Arizona-based financial planning firm, recently opened a new office in Boca Raton, Florida. The firm specializes in U.S. / Canadian cross-border planning.

 

Abalos & Associates, P.C., has hired Patty Schumacher, CPA, as a senior accountant.

 

Rick Rayson, CPA, who has lead the phoenix office of Deloitte & Touche for the past seven years, is moving to the firm’s larger operation in Orange County. The ASCPA thanks him for his service to the profession in Arizona. Rayson has been active in the Society and the community.

 

Larry Field, CPA, has been appointed to the AICPA Board of Examiners Committee.

 

Rufus Glasper, CPA, was recently appointed to co-chair the newly created P-20 Council with Governor Janet Napalitano. The council is designed to improve education in Arizona and to ensure that more students graduate from high school, succeed in college and are ready for the modern workforce.
