Household Finance Classes Assist Families in Need

Sadie Thompson

ASCPA members provide a series of three quarterly classes on household finances to the residents in the Homeward Bound transitional housing program. The financial series of classes are part of a required curriculum that each resident must take to complete the program. The mission of the Homeward Bound program is to assist the families in being self-sufficient and placing them into affordable housing, breaking the multi-generational cycles of homelessness and domestic violence.

ASCPA members who have shown an interest in teaching a household finance class are given the class schedule for the quarter, which allows members to volunteer to teach a class. New volunteers normally observe their first class before they begin teaching. The classes are held on three consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We teach from a book donated by Fresh Start Women’s Foundation titled A Woman’s Guide to Taking Charge: Basic Tools for Managing your Money. In addition to the book, we have presentations for each class which can be used as either a presentation or handout format, depending on the available equipment.

The courses offered are budgeting, checking and savings, and credit. We stress the difference between needs versus wants, the secrets to saving big, and the cost of credit. We also learn from the residents. They explain that a child needing to stay home sick can cause a financial and family crisis when living pay-check-to-pay-check and not getting paid sick time. Teaching a class at Homeward Bound can be quite a rewarding experience. Please contact Sadie Thompson at sthompson@ debtfreetoday.com to become a volunteer.
