Diving CPA Weathers Storms and Illness

Janet Crance, CPA, and her husband have always loved the water.

“Snorkeling always seemed like just a tease,” says Crance. “We received our scuba certifications seven years ago and have enjoyed it so much we had our daughters certified so we can go diving as a family.”

“The weightlessness of the water relaxes me,” says Crance who has fibromyalgia and feels diving is therapeutic. “Also, the abundance of color and sea life is unbelievable. There is nothing like swimming eye to eye with a turtle or a dolphin!”

On a recent trip to
Cozumel, Crance and her husband, Chuck, were caught off guard by the rapid development of Hurricane Wilma. They evacuated to Cancun, and had to spend five nights in a hotel to ride out the hurricane. The aftermath, however, proved worse than the storm itself.

“There was a lot of rioting, looting and complete chaos,” explains Crance. “All the roads leading out of
Cancun were flooded, and the airport was destroyed. We were able to buy bus tickets to Merida, (the capital of Yucatan and about three hours inland from Cancun) but since the roads were flooded we had to take a different route, which turned into an eight-hour bus ride. We then had to stay in Merida for an additional three nights until we could get a plane ticket out.”

“I will never again complain about the windy weather,” laughs Crance. “Nothing can compare to 150 mile per hour winds!”

Crance likes to encourage everyone to try diving.

“If I can do this, anyone can do it,” says Crance. “It’s just a matter of learning to breathe through your mouth rather than through your nose, and ignoring the fact that you sound like Darth Vader underwater!” —
