W. P. Carey School of Business Creates Huizingh Teaching Award

An award recognizing and honoring excellence in teaching, inspiring, and mentoring students has been created and named for Dr. William Huizingh, a retired W. P. Carey School of Business professor.

The annual award is given to a professor who has committed his or her life to helping students realize their full potential.

Huizingh joined the W. P. Carey School of Business (formerly the ASU College of Business) as an assistant professor in 1959, and in January 1964, he became chair of the School of Accountancy (formerly the Accounting Department). In September 1965, he was promoted to professor, and also remained chair of the department. He became associate dean in September 1970, a role he continued to serve in until 1981.  He retired in 1985.

At a recent homecoming celebration, Huizingh was honored with great fondness by several of his former students, including ASCPA member Tony Astorga, John Mumsford, Craig Weatherup and Bob Short. A plaque, commemorating his teaching legacy, will display the names of the teaching award recipients. Several ASU alumni provided a generous leadership gift to create the endowment.
