This month’s update includes information about legislative update presentations, practitioner feedback on the Taxpayer First Act, a thank you to Congressman David Schweikert, letters in support of conformity in 2020, political fundraisers and an update from the Accountancy Board meeting.
Legislative Update Presentations
ASCPA President & CEO Cindie Hubiak provided a legislative update at EY’s Annual Arizona CPE Conference, as well as at Deloitte’s Annual Technical Update Conference. Special thanks to both firms for inviting the Society to share the latest legislative news with attendees.
Practitioner Feedback on Taxpayer First Act
Thank you to David Walser and Jack Gallagher for agreeing to provide stakeholder input on the Taxpayer First Act (TFA). A major component of the TFA requires the IRS to develop a comprehensive strategy for customer service and modernization. The IRS Commissioner requested stakeholder participation to help implement the TFA and provide practitioner insights.
Thank You to Congressman Schweikert
In a previous update, we shared that the Society reached out to U.S. House Members to request their support of the Fiscal State of the Nation resolution. This bi-partisan resolution would require the U.S. Comptroller General to give an annual presentation to the House and Senate Budget Committees regarding the audited financial statement of the federal government. Special thanks to Congressman David Schweikert for signing on as a co-sponsor of this resolution.
The ASCPA, with assistance from DeMenna Public Affairs, hand-delivered letters to all 90 Arizona legislators requesting full conformity in the 2020 session. The ASCPA asks lawmakers to pass conformity in the coming legislative session as quickly as possible to make paying taxes easier for Arizonans.
ASCPA Board Chair Jared Van Arsdale, President & CEO Cindie Hubiak, and Director of Government Relations John Baumer attended a fundraising event with Governor Doug Ducey. Cindie and John attended a separate event to support Senator Carter. ASCPA lobbyists at DeMenna Public Affairs hosted an event for Senate President Karen Fann and House Speaker Rusty Bowers, with participation from the ASCPA.
At this month’s State Board of Accountancy meeting, the Board received an update on the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy annual meeting, where the topic of CPA Evolution and the future of the profession were discussed. The Board also approved the rulemaking package referenced in last month’s update. Heather Gordon has been appointed to the Peer Review Oversight Advisory Committee – thank you for volunteering, Heather.
