Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Arizona Society of CPAs (ASCPA)?

The Arizona Society of CPAs (ASCPA) is the largest professional association for CPAs and accounting professionals in Arizona. We provide continuing education, advocacy for the profession, connect members through networking opportunities and support the next generation of CPAs.

Who represents the profession nationally?

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) represents the CPA profession nationally regarding rule-making and standard-setting. It advocates before national legislative bodies, public interest groups and other professional organizations.

The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) is a forum for the nation's state boards of accountancy, which administer the Uniform CPA Examination, license certified public accountants and regulate the practice of public accountancy in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) is the independent organization that establishes and improves standards of accounting and financial reporting for U.S. state and local government.

What are the requirements to become a CPA in Arizona?

To become a CPA in Arizona, there is a combination of education, experience, exam and ethics. The current model requires a bachelor’s degree or higher (150 hours), one year of work experience, passing a four-part exam, and passing the AICPA Ethics Exam, with a 90% or higher. However, new legislation has been passed and will take into effect on January 1, 2027. For more information on the current and pending pathways, click here.
